I have nothing against, Katharine McPhee. She is pretty, talented, and very charming. Here is the thing, she is also very dull on screen.

She simply doesn’t pop, there’s no fire, no passion, no thing. She is just as pretty and talented as that sweet girl who goes to your church, or lives in your neighborhood that a really sweet voice.

For a show that advertises in the commercial , Debra Messing saying “she just glows”, it just doesn’t seem like any of the face time Katharine is given adds up to anything more than ‘average’ to ‘okay’. Where is this supposed glow? Does Katharine McPhee make you feel like you can soar when you hear her sing like Christina Aguilera, or Jennifer Hudson? Are her dance moves so astounding that you simply cannot take your eyes off her?

No, that is not gonna happen, sorry guys, but they should have casted someone with more punch, who had that factor “X”, that undeniable thing that easily shows the audience watching there is no question your a star and stand apart from all others.

Maybe once the show premieres I will change my mind, and if I do I will own up to it. But I predict a painfully short run of Smash, unless they immediately switch lead actresses. Just my opinion, but something about her just isn’t gonna sell.  The tag line “Stars aren’t born, their made ” would be a pretty honest way to describe this mess.

LOS ANGELES — Terrence Howard was ordered Tuesday to stay 100 yards away from his estranged wife after she claimed the Oscar-nominated actor repeatedly threatened and hit her during their marriage.

The star denies the allegations.

Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon granted the stay-away order sought by Michelle Howard after she filed a lengthy declaration alleging abuse began within a week of the couple’s January 2010 marriage.

Michelle Howard filed for divorce a year later.

The restraining order remains in effect until a Jan. 17 court hearing.

She claims Howard, 42, has repeatedly hit her and threatened her in a text message last week. She stated in a sworn declaration that she is in constant fear of Howard and has chronic health issues caused by the actor’s treatment.

Howard in his own sworn declaration wrote that he has never threatened his wife and that she has repeatedly vowed to ruin his reputation and release private details.

“I live in constant fear of Michelle’s endeavors to ruin my reputation; even providing this declaration may well lead to my being subjected to a paparazzi blitz which would not be good for my career,” Howard wrote.

Michelle Howard wrote that Howard has hit her several times and threatened to throw her from a hotel balcony in South Africa last year. She included a text message she said he sent to her on Thursday in which he begged her not to pursue the divorce and threaten his career, ending the missive, “I can’t promise how I will respond.”

Howard wrote in his filing that he immediately followed up the message with another text stating that he wasn’t threatening her.

“Despite my efforts to remove myself physically from (Howard’s) life, his periodic mood swings from anger, threats and violence to statements of love and requests for reconciliation continue and have not subsided,” she wrote.

Howard appeared in the first “Iron Man” film and received an Oscar nomination in 2005 for his role in “Hustle and Flow.”

His attorney Christian Markey III did not immediately return an email message seeking comment.

The Tennessee-set drama tells a tale of two men from distinct backgrounds embarking on a music-steered journey through the deep south who are then linked by a series of events that took place years earlier.

“One of the things that drew me to it was it has life affirming quality to it. You see a lot of films where you don’t care for the people and you’re watching them do things, but it just doesn’t help us out,” Van Peebles told The Huffington Post. “Dr. [Martin Luther] King said, ‘We either learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we die together as fools.’ And I think ‘Redemption Road’ is about some very different folks having to learn how to live together as brothers and sisters.”

For Duncan, who also serves as the film’s co-producer, it was the portrayal of his character Augy and the direction of Peebles which drew his interest to working on the film. “Two things attracted me to the role. The first was the writing and the character. I never played a character like that,” he said. “Independent movies sometimes come along and the script is so good that you want to be involved in it. It wasn’t about the money, it was all about the script. The second thing that attracted me to this movie was Mario Van Peebles. Just to be able to work with that brother, I’ve met him several times before. And just to know him and to know how cool he is, and to finally get to work with a director like that, it was unbelievable.”

“Since I co-produced the movie, the brother was in my trailer literally every morning for 40 minutes,” Duncan continued. “We would go over lines and go over what we would do for the day before the sun set. And the brother is truly intelligent, he knows his game, he’s on top of his game, and those are the two main things that attracted me to the movie.”

It was Peebles’ vast experience as both an actor and a director that gave him the advantage of encouraging the film’s cast to showcase some of their best work. In fact, the former daytime television actor revealed that being personable is a vital when it comes to heading a motion picture. “You’ll be surprised how many actors don’t really get directed. And I think after 20 years, I’m getting pretty comfortable with it,” Van Peebles explained.

“They say that you have ten-thousand hours to really master something, well I significantly have had more than that. But I give my actors what I would want as an actor. So when I’m directing it I’m serving up what I would want to have. And a lot of it is not about the script, the lights, and the camera. It’s about people having people skills. And if you have the right people skills then you can really get this great performance from Michael Clarke Duncan, and this one from Morgan [Simpson], and this one from an actor like Luke Perry, who’s very sharp and can really mix it up. And that’s exciting.”

“He’s more hands on and he wants the characters to pop, he wants them to come to life,” Van Peebles added. “He wanted this character [Augy] to be so unique, because there is a flip side to this character. And once you see the movie, you’ll see what I’m talking about. The character’s going down a redemption road himself. This character has to redeem himself for something he did in the past. And in order for him to redeem himself he must help somebody. So Mario was very, very careful about how Augy was portrayed.”

For Duncan, holding court as co-producer while being the film’s leading star was no easy task. The ‘Green Mile’ alumnus and Chicago native juggled hats as he promoted and shot ‘Redemption Road’ all while developing his forthcoming FOX series, “The Finder.” He also talked about the difficulties in shooting the film: scheduling locations, knowing what shots were need and working against the daylight.

“Most of the time we were battling with the sun going down,” he said. “But I had a lot of different things going on with the producing and trying to get the movie out there, and trying to do publicity that was my end of it. Mario and a lot of other guys have been doing the ground work. I myself have been doing other things. … It’s a big challenge, so I’ve been trying to do as many interviews as I can to help the film out.”

The motion picture’s underlying message of living harmoniously with each other has already inspired viewers, according to Peebles. “I think as a filmmaker it’s like having a big megaphone. Some folks when they get on the mic they really don’t have much to say, and I thought here was a chance to entertain but say a little something with it. People who have seen the movie came back and said that it inspired them to try to do better with their people, their in-laws, their friends, with their relationships that have been broken or damaged. So the thing that inspired me wasn’t the money or anything like that, it was really the story itself. And of course, working with Michael Clarke Duncan.”

Mario Van Peebles is set to share the big screen alongside his iconic father, Melvin Van Peebles, in his forthcoming flick, “We The Party,” set to hit theaters early 2012. Michael Clarke Duncan’s FOX series, “The Finder,” premieres on January 5 immediately following “American Idol.”

Here, Sanaa talks about her new film, “Contagion,” an apocalyptic thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and featuring an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Elliott Gould.

Kam Williams: Hi Sanaa, thanks for the time. I’m honored to have another opportunity to speak with you.
Sanaa Lathan: Oh, my pleasure, Kam. How have you been?

 

KW: Great, thanks. I told my readers and editors that I’d be interviewing you, and they sent in so many questions I’d like to get right to them. Larry Greenberg says: Contagion has such an amazing cast, yourself included. Was there anyone in particular that you felt a strong affinity with whom you would like to work with again?

 

SL: Well, the truth is, I only worked with Laurence [Fishburne], because Steven Soderbergh kept each of the movie’s storylines separate, although they’re obviously intertwined cinematically. So, all of my scenes were with Laurence.

 

KW: What was Soderbergh like as a director?

 

SL: He was amazing! I would love to work with him again.

 

KW: The film struck me as very similar to Traffic except revolving around an outbreak instead of around drugs.

 

SL: Exactly! Here, the virus is the main character.

 

KW: Harriet Pakula Teweles says: Your role in ‘Vera Stark’ was a marvelous, breakthrough theatrical performance. It was a privilege to be in the audience. How does your preparation and performance change when you move from stage to screen?

 

SL: I feel that every role is different regardless of whether it’s on the stage or on the screen. The great thing about the stage is that you have a structured month-long rehearsal period where you’re going in every day. You have to have lots of run-throughs with theater because there are no second takes in front of a live audience. It’s very different with film. There, the preparation depends on the role and how much time I have. Each character speaks to me differently. I have to assess the demands of the role and what’s going to bring the character to life. So, I don’t have a set approach with film. But I’m always trying to get to a realization of truth with each character.

 

KW: Harriet also says: For ‘Raisin in the Sun’ and ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,’ you took on parts that had been made famous by others. Did you study their performances in preparation?

 

SL: No, in fact, I made a point to not watch any of the movies. That is one of my rules. If someone has already done a role I’m about to do, I won’t watch the original until after I’m finished playing the role.

 

KW: Why is that?

 

SL: Because I believe the subconscious is very impressionable. At least mine is. Whenever I take on anything where I might be tempted to emulate a prior performance, I try to go off the text in order to ensure a fresh interpretation.

 

KW: Attorney Bernadette Beekman says: I just saw you in Meet Vera Stark off-Broadway recently. You are great on screen and in theater. How do you think growing up in show business influenced you during your formative years?

 

SL: Let’s see… I really don’t know, because I don’t know anything else. I was always around the arts. My mother [actress Eleanor McCoy] was in the original productions of Timbuktu and The Wiz on Broadway, and I was always in the way, running around backstage. And I was always taking art and dance classes. One good thing I do have is compassionate parents who understand my trials and tribulations because they’ve been through it before as well.

 

KW: Bernadette has a follow-up. Are you interested in directing?

 

SL: One day. I’m presently into producing. I have a partner with whom I’m developing some projects right now. Directing is something I might try further down the line. You never know.

 

KW: Editor/Legist Patricia Turnier asks: What African-American icon would you like to portray in a movie?

 

SL: I don’t think that way. I’m already living my dream having the opportunity to play Vera Stark, Maggie the Cat [in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof] and so many other wonderful characters. Instead of thinking about what icon I’d like to play, I am looking to be challenged. I want to be scared, I want to work with great actors and directors, and I want to tell stories about women that will inspire people. It’s more about the quality than any particular person I’d like to portray.

 

KW: Patricia also says: Many young people think they can make it in the movie industry without an education. You earned a master’s degree at Yale University’s School of Drama. Was it helpful to you to have earned that degree?

 

SL: Many very successful people have made it without an acting background and some are even proud that they’ve never taken any acting classes. But I wanted to be the best that I could be for me which meant studying drama at Yale where I got a great education in theater after I was fortunate enough to be admitted. People may know me from films, but theater is my first love. I did about 35 plays before I even landed my first screen role. I’m very comfortable on stage, and theater is not something you can just wing.

 

KW: Patricia asks: What was the best career advice you got from your father?

 

SL: Early on in my career, when I was frequently frustrated while going out for auditions, my dad [producer/director Stan Lathan] told me, “Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a job. And always give it your best because people in the industry talk, and even if you don’t get that role, someone might remember you and hire you later.”

 

KW: Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would?

 

SL: No, I’ve been asked pretty much everything. [Laughs]

 

KW: The Tasha Smith question: Are you ever afraid?

 

SL: All the time! In fact, I believe that “fear” is an acronym for “False Evidence Appearing Real” and that when you have a fear, it’s almost a signal that you have to do whatever it is you’re afraid of. What makes you grow as a human being is stepping outside of your comfort zone.

 

KW: The Columbus Short question: Are you happy?

 

SL: I am. I’m definitely a happy person in general, but I cultivate that happiness. I think that to a certain extent happiness is a choice.

 

KW: The Teri Emerson question: When was the last time you had a good laugh?

 

SL: This morning I was cracking up watching America’s Funniest Home Videos while I was jumping on my Rebounder, which is like my treadmill.

 

KW: Ola Jackson asks: What is your opinion of how reality-TV shows depict black women?

 

SL: I think there have been some positive portrayals as well as negative. One thing reality-TV is definitely providing for us is variety.

 

KW: What is your guiltiest pleasure?

 

SL: I love going to the movies and getting Raisinets, a big tub of popcorn and a Coke. That’s definitely a guilty pleasure because I can’t be doing that all the time.

 

KW: The bookworm Troy Johnson question: What was the last book you read?

 

SL: I just re-read a book about acting by Susan Batson called “Truth.”

 

KW: The music maven Heather Covington question: What music are you listening to?

 

SL: I’m really feeling Beyonce’s new album. I like that a lot.

 

KW: What is your favorite dish to cook?

 

SL: I don’t have a favorite dish, although lately I’ve been eating a lot of salad in preparation for the premiere. I can make a great gourmet salad like nobody’s business.

 

KW: The Uduak Oduok question: Who is your favorite clothes designer?

 

SL: Whatever looks good on me. [LOL] I have no loyalties in that department.

 

KW: When you look in the mirror, what do you see?

 

SL: It depends on the day, and on the moment in the day.

 

KW: If you could have one wish instantly granted, what would that be for?

 

SL: Wow! That question’s so good! That I could eat whatever I want and still be a size 4.

 

KW: The Ling-Ju Yen question: What is your earliest childhood memory?

 

SL: I don’t know exactly how old I was, but I remember my mother playing Stevie Wonder’s “Song’s in the Key of Life” while I was sitting on the floor in our New York apartment.

 

KW: The Judyth Piazza question: What key quality do you believe all successful people share?

 

SL: Never giving up.

 

KW: Dante Lee, author of “Black Business Secrets, asks: ”What was the best business decision you ever made?”

 

SL: I haven’t made it yet.

 

KW: The Tavis Smiley question: How do you want to be remembered?

 

SL: I want to be remembered as one who left behind a legacy of great art that entertained and uplifted the world.

Zoe Saldana certainly has it all, or so it would seem. Her café au lait skin is as flawless as it is pretty, her figure is toned and slim, and the powers that be in Hollywood appear willing and ready to throw big bucks behind any project she appears in. Still there’s one thing she’s oddly lacking: a major fashion-magazine cover to accompany the release of her first solo feature film.

Colombiana marks Saldana’s initial foray into the “kick ass” female superhero role and the first time she’s carried a major film all on her own—a feat only the likes of Angelina Jolie, the grand dame of female action heroes, has been able to pull off in recent years.

Stylish and sleek advertisements for the film that casts Saldana as a revenge-seeking hit woman were enticing enough to secure second place for the movie at the U.S box office this weekend, even as many on the East Coast faced the wrath of Hurricane Irene. With tickets sales of over $11 million, Colombiana’ came in only second to persistent fan favorite, The Help.

Zoe is Hollywood’s new ‘it’ girl, there’s no doubt about that,’’ says Marvet Britto of the Britto Agency, an entertainment branding and image consultant company. ‘’She is on the short list of actresses for most of the projects directors are talking about. That can only grow and get bigger.’’

Pretty impressive for a woman of color, and even more so given that Saldana didn’t receive one of the major advertising perks usually guaranteed for a major film such as Colombiana and to the young, beautiful, and hot in Tinseltown. Magazine covers aplenty. Hollywood is without doubt an industry driven by the media that surrounds it. Movies and the stars selected to appear in them survive, thrive, and often become household names not just for the roles they take on but by the deluge of media opportunities that come along with a hit film or television show.

It’s hard to deny that the massive popularity actresses such as Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Gwyneth Paltrow enjoy is primarily fed by the numerous magazine covers they grace each month and not by their performances in critically acclaimed films.

So what about Zoe? In 2010 Saldana was famously absent from Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood cover, even though in 2009 she’d gained the distinction of becoming the only actress to have three movies in the top 20 for three consecutive weeks. One of those films, Avatar, became the highest-grossing film of all time.

Last year designer Calvin Klein tapped her to star in his Envy underwear ad campaign. An impressive feat for any actress in Hollywood these days, though it appears not impressive enough for the New York editors of the top magazines.

This month Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire, and Elle opted to go with the tried and true in their selections of famous faces for their September issues, and that didn’t include Zoe. Saldana managed to land on the covers of special-interest magazines such as Ebony and Latina.

‘’The magazine industry has always been hesitant to put a woman of color or black woman on the cover of a major fashion magazine because they don’t sell well,’’ says Bethann Hardison, fashion advocate, former model, and owner of a modeling agency that bears her name. ‘’That hasn’t changed over the years as far as the publishing world is concerned. It’s still very much about blonde hair and blue eyes.’’

Though Saldana’s heritage is both Puerto Rican and Dominican, and she regularly touts her Spanish heritage to all who’ll listen, she’s routinely considered African-American, largely due to her smooth brown complexion and dark-brown locks. Unlike with her Latina peers Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Alba, who both have slightly more European features, Saldana’s browner hue is still searching for its place of favor with top magazine editors in the U.S.

Interestingly enough, Saldana’s face recently graced the July cover of Russian Vogue and the February issue of Italian Vogue.

‘’She may not say she’s black, but black is in there somewhere,’’ said Hardison. ‘’And black is what they see when they get ready to decide who’s the cover of their magazines. It’s not fair, but it’s the way it is.’’

Others in the fashion industry point out that while both Beyoncé and Rihanna appear on Instyle and Glamour magazine covers this month, both women are singers, which is a more traditionally accepted role for women of color. Dominating the box office is not.

Michael Schultz, an African-American director and producer, says he’s rather perplexed at Saldana’s lack of appeal in editors’ offices and at the newsstand. The director of such films as Carwash and television shows like In Plain Sight says the Dominican starlet has replaced Halle Berry as the woman of color of choice and in demand in Hollywood.

‘’I frankly think she is the new Halle Berry with more talent,’’ says Schultz. ‘’And the white boys think she’s hot, so the sky is the limit for her with the right moves.’’

Does she have them? While she and her management team have thus far been savvy and calculating in choosing film roles that showcase her acting skills and beauty, she’ll need the surrounding media support if she’s ever to skyrocket to the land of Jolie or higher.

“She’s a charming girl and an actress with a presence,” says African-American film historian Donald Bogle. ‘’But without those magazine covers, it will be very hard for her to go to the next level.’’

Britto says Saldana had the great misfortune of opening in a major film during one of the most vital months for fashion. September issues of women’s publications are usually the largest of the year and feature hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of ads showcasing fall attire.

‘’They weren’t willing to take a chance on someone that hadn’t proven themselves a big seller in this time period,’’ says Britto. ‘’They must have someone who they know will sell and sell well for the September issue.’’

Hardison sees the Saldana magazine dilemma through slightly different lenses. A former model who for years has been a top advocate for the increase of brown and black models on the runway and in print ads, she thinks the calendar month is of little consequence.

‘’I’ve thought about this for a while and I’ve come to the realization that a brown face just doesn’t resonate with nonminorities when it’s on the cover of magazines,’’ said Hardison, “so they won’t buy it.’’

“Black men, we’re never called sexy. We’re called athletic, intense, we’re described as being the strong type, the silent type. But we’re never really described as being sexy… in general the word sexy doesn’t apply to black men, particularly … The word has been thrown at me a few times so if I have to say I own it, fine.”

As previously reported, beginning August 17 the Golden Globe-nominated actor will host and produce BBC America’s new drama franchise “Dramaville,” which will include three BBC original series. The London native will resume his role as John Luther on October 5 when the second season of BBC’s “Luther” kicks off.

absolutely gorgeous!

7. Phylicia Rashad, 63. Mrs. Huxtable hasn’t changed a bit, everything from her beauty, style, grace, and class is still in

tact, without a hair out of place!

6. Gabrielle Union, 38. For a woman kissing 40, She still could pass for 25. No lie.

5. Angela Bassett, 52. The soon to be 53 Angela Bassett, has been a staple for the beautiful black actress for years. Not only

that but the woman has arms that will put Michelle Obama’s to shame.

4. Blair Underwood, 46. Without a wrinkle in sight Blair Underwood is to black women, what George Clooney is to Caucasian’s, in

other words–all of that! This man still looks just as good as he did in “Set It Off,” when he was pouring wax down Jada

Pinkett’s back, and chile I am not mad.  At all.

3. Jada Pinkett-Smith, 39. Though there’s much speculation as to whether or not she’s had work done or not, one thing you cannot

say is that if she didn’t throw some dookey braids in her hair or cut it short to a fade, she could still look like she did back

in 1995.

2. Will Smith, 42. I’d be lying if I said Will looks exactly like he did during his fresh prince days, but he does look amazing

to be in his forties.

1. Nia Long, 40. In my eyes, Nia Long exemplifies beauty! I’ll nominate her as the most beautiful woman in the world over Halle
