Willow Smith may be known for whipping her hair back and forth, but it looks like she’s going to have to find a new signature catch phrase.

The singer, daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, debuted a new, short look on her WhoSay page via Twitter Thursday. In fact, it looks like Smith ditched her hair altogether and is now sporting a shaved head, similar to her dad and brother Jaden’s new looks.

Smith gave no explanation or reason as to why she decided to switch up her look, but she’s certainly in good company.

The only thing that could possibly upstage the fun, flirty and ultra sexy lingerie and swimsuits from Etam’s Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show would be a hefty dose of diva!

And indeed there was.

On Monday night style icon and actress Grace Jones was joined by the legendary Chaka Khan, Sister Sledge and Gloria Gaynor in Paris where the ladies turned the Etam Spring/Summer 2012 runway show into a modern day Studio 54.

The 1970′s disco queens belted out the songs that made them stars, as models ripped the runway in hot pink afros and intimates that left little to the imagination. And if that wasn’t wild enough–some models carried snakes around their shoulders like pashminas and strutted out with technicolored poodles.

It’s to be expected that models working a lingerie show are in tip-top shape, but can someone please tell us how Grace Jones, who is 63-years-old, can still rock the heck out of a leotard? Her body defies logic and biology. You go girl!

To close out the show, Sister Sledge was joined onstage by the rest of the 70′s songstresses to perform their mega hit “We Are Family.”

We were thrilled to discover that our favorite fashionista of 2011, Solange Knowles, just posted a slew of amazing personal photos from her summer vacation in France on her Tumblr “MyDamnBlog.”

Beyonce’s baby sister spent a month over the summer in Paris with her adorable son Julez and video director boyfriend Alan Ferguson taking in the sights and attending a friend’s wedding.

 

Here’s what Solange had to say about the trip:

I spent a month in Paris this past summer with Julez and Alan. I have spent much time there over the years… But not ever until I really ‘immersed’ myself there, did I really fall deeply in love with the city. I will always remember the simple pleasures of our everyday living. Going in the morning for bread, hanging laundry on the close line in the shower, Julez negotiating the cost of getting my hair braided by locals, (his French saved us in many instances such as these), Buying the french bootleg “Cars 2″ Dvd in the Metro Station…(Only to arrive home to the Cars 2 Blank Version). We rented a small charming apartment in the 10th.. And ate and drank our way through beautiful memorable days.Sounds like a fabulous vacation–and thanks to Solange, we’ve got the photos to prove it.

Beyond radiating a sense of peace and love, these pics are the perfect example of what a true style star Solange has become. That printed dress and bold blazer, those Prada Baroque sunglasses and her fierce turban make us smile. And let’s not forget the guys– Alan and Julez don’t look too shabby either!

A salvaged shipping container may seem an unpromising showcase for cutting-edge style. But not to Hekima Hapa, who set up shop in one of the rectangular spaces scattered throughout the Dekalb Market in Brooklyn on Saturday.

She deftly exploited her cramped quarters as an intimate backdrop for her African-themed, Brooklyn-sewn designs. Ms. Hapa and her retail partner, Alicia Piller, a jewelry designer, were participating in the Afrika21 Mixtape Project, part of the market conceived as a platform for emerging African artists of every stripe.

“All things African are high trend right now,” Ms. Hapa maintained. At one time, people who picked up African objects on their travels treated them as collectibles, she said. “They didn’t wear them. But they’re wearing them now.”

Her vibrant fashions were a hit with visitors strolling this sprawling parking-lot bazaar at Flatbush Avenue and Willoughby Street. Some, like Nomsa Mazwai, a South African pop star, festooned themselves in Ms. Piller’s jewelry. Delphine Fawundu piled tribal bangles atop colorful leg warmers she had repurposed as elbow-length gloves. Izetta Henderson, a fashion buyer and designer, said it was refreshing to see so much enterprise in the shadow of Forest City, the monolithic apartment towers. “This,” she said of the thrumming market, “is what Brooklyn used to be about.”

Apparently it wasn’t just fashion bloggers who weren’t keen on the look. PETA had its issues with Rihanna’s outfit as well.

The Daily Mail reports that the ostrich feathers that covered the entire top have angered PETA activists, as the feathers might have been collected in a cruel or harmful way — possibly while the animal was still alive.

A PETA spokesperson spoke to the Daily Star about Rihanna’s offense, taking this interesting tack: “We keep hoping that Rihanna, a victim of violence herself, will learn to open her heart and start empathising with the suffering of others.”

Apparently Rihanna is quite the repeat offender — PETA called out the star for wearing “foxes, cows and reptiles,” who’s appeared in all sorts of fur over years (although we wonder if items like this crazy hat were faux or real).

Guess Riri won’t be the next celeb stripping down for the animal rights organizations, which loves its celebrities and models. Christy Turlington, Christina Applegate, Alicia Silverstone and dozens more have posed in PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads. Designer Stella McCartney has also been a huge fashion advocate of the cause.

Maybe Stella can send some new tops Rihanna’s way…

Zoe Saldana certainly has it all, or so it would seem. Her café au lait skin is as flawless as it is pretty, her figure is toned and slim, and the powers that be in Hollywood appear willing and ready to throw big bucks behind any project she appears in. Still there’s one thing she’s oddly lacking: a major fashion-magazine cover to accompany the release of her first solo feature film.

Colombiana marks Saldana’s initial foray into the “kick ass” female superhero role and the first time she’s carried a major film all on her own—a feat only the likes of Angelina Jolie, the grand dame of female action heroes, has been able to pull off in recent years.

Stylish and sleek advertisements for the film that casts Saldana as a revenge-seeking hit woman were enticing enough to secure second place for the movie at the U.S box office this weekend, even as many on the East Coast faced the wrath of Hurricane Irene. With tickets sales of over $11 million, Colombiana’ came in only second to persistent fan favorite, The Help.

Zoe is Hollywood’s new ‘it’ girl, there’s no doubt about that,’’ says Marvet Britto of the Britto Agency, an entertainment branding and image consultant company. ‘’She is on the short list of actresses for most of the projects directors are talking about. That can only grow and get bigger.’’

Pretty impressive for a woman of color, and even more so given that Saldana didn’t receive one of the major advertising perks usually guaranteed for a major film such as Colombiana and to the young, beautiful, and hot in Tinseltown. Magazine covers aplenty. Hollywood is without doubt an industry driven by the media that surrounds it. Movies and the stars selected to appear in them survive, thrive, and often become household names not just for the roles they take on but by the deluge of media opportunities that come along with a hit film or television show.

It’s hard to deny that the massive popularity actresses such as Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Gwyneth Paltrow enjoy is primarily fed by the numerous magazine covers they grace each month and not by their performances in critically acclaimed films.

So what about Zoe? In 2010 Saldana was famously absent from Vanity Fair’s annual Hollywood cover, even though in 2009 she’d gained the distinction of becoming the only actress to have three movies in the top 20 for three consecutive weeks. One of those films, Avatar, became the highest-grossing film of all time.

Last year designer Calvin Klein tapped her to star in his Envy underwear ad campaign. An impressive feat for any actress in Hollywood these days, though it appears not impressive enough for the New York editors of the top magazines.

This month Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire, and Elle opted to go with the tried and true in their selections of famous faces for their September issues, and that didn’t include Zoe. Saldana managed to land on the covers of special-interest magazines such as Ebony and Latina.

‘’The magazine industry has always been hesitant to put a woman of color or black woman on the cover of a major fashion magazine because they don’t sell well,’’ says Bethann Hardison, fashion advocate, former model, and owner of a modeling agency that bears her name. ‘’That hasn’t changed over the years as far as the publishing world is concerned. It’s still very much about blonde hair and blue eyes.’’

Though Saldana’s heritage is both Puerto Rican and Dominican, and she regularly touts her Spanish heritage to all who’ll listen, she’s routinely considered African-American, largely due to her smooth brown complexion and dark-brown locks. Unlike with her Latina peers Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Alba, who both have slightly more European features, Saldana’s browner hue is still searching for its place of favor with top magazine editors in the U.S.

Interestingly enough, Saldana’s face recently graced the July cover of Russian Vogue and the February issue of Italian Vogue.

‘’She may not say she’s black, but black is in there somewhere,’’ said Hardison. ‘’And black is what they see when they get ready to decide who’s the cover of their magazines. It’s not fair, but it’s the way it is.’’

Others in the fashion industry point out that while both Beyoncé and Rihanna appear on Instyle and Glamour magazine covers this month, both women are singers, which is a more traditionally accepted role for women of color. Dominating the box office is not.

Michael Schultz, an African-American director and producer, says he’s rather perplexed at Saldana’s lack of appeal in editors’ offices and at the newsstand. The director of such films as Carwash and television shows like In Plain Sight says the Dominican starlet has replaced Halle Berry as the woman of color of choice and in demand in Hollywood.

‘’I frankly think she is the new Halle Berry with more talent,’’ says Schultz. ‘’And the white boys think she’s hot, so the sky is the limit for her with the right moves.’’

Does she have them? While she and her management team have thus far been savvy and calculating in choosing film roles that showcase her acting skills and beauty, she’ll need the surrounding media support if she’s ever to skyrocket to the land of Jolie or higher.

“She’s a charming girl and an actress with a presence,” says African-American film historian Donald Bogle. ‘’But without those magazine covers, it will be very hard for her to go to the next level.’’

Britto says Saldana had the great misfortune of opening in a major film during one of the most vital months for fashion. September issues of women’s publications are usually the largest of the year and feature hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of ads showcasing fall attire.

‘’They weren’t willing to take a chance on someone that hadn’t proven themselves a big seller in this time period,’’ says Britto. ‘’They must have someone who they know will sell and sell well for the September issue.’’

Hardison sees the Saldana magazine dilemma through slightly different lenses. A former model who for years has been a top advocate for the increase of brown and black models on the runway and in print ads, she thinks the calendar month is of little consequence.

‘’I’ve thought about this for a while and I’ve come to the realization that a brown face just doesn’t resonate with nonminorities when it’s on the cover of magazines,’’ said Hardison, “so they won’t buy it.’’

The only problem is I have to look long and hard sometimes to find a black celebrity who showcases show stopping glamour and style that is equivalent to their white counterparts.

It’s not that there aren’t any stylish black celebs to display, but as we all know that unless your Beyonce, Halle Berry or Rihanna the celebrity media chooses to look the other way when it comes to black stars. So here is my line up of the hottest , most stylish looking black celebrities of 2011.

Despite playing in two tournaments since last year’s show, Serena was awarded the ESPY award for best female tennis player, which is like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences giving an Oscar to Al Pacino for this year’s sure-to-be stinker “Jack and Jill” because he was fantastic in “The Godfather II.” Yes, we know; it’s useless to complain about a meaningless, arbitrary award like an ESPY. Still, you’d think ESPN could have lured Serena to the show with the promise of something else (a lifetime achievement award, a montage of her comeback, a shawl) rather than a prize for playing no matches during the voting period. Not that there were many other candidates for the prize but surely there was someone.

What about wheelchair tennis great Esther Vergeer, who’s won more than 400 matches in a row? Or mom- turned-champion Kim Clijsters? Or those ladies who always play doubles at the court down the street from you because, you know, they played tennis this year. Serena is playing some World TeamTennis events for the Washington Kastles this month before returning to tournament play July 25 in Stanford. She’s set to play three more tournaments before the U.S. Open.

The spread includes some of today’s top models of color, like Joan Smalls, Jourdan Dunn, Arlenis Sosa, and Chanel Iman. American Vogue, which recently ran an all-Asian spread, hinted in a recent blog post that it had an all-black spread in the works, featuring rising star models Ajak Deng and Anais Mali. It’s difficult to say whether these pages are gimmicks or actual steps towards fashion becoming more inclusive. Until time hopefully answers that question, we hope magazines continue to embrace all kinds of faces — and bodies, for that matter.
